The formation and release of environmentally sensitive
byproducts from a fibre processing industry is related
to the specific fibre used and the processing technology
involved. The ability to change the fibre properties
or the processing technology offers the potential to
decrease the environmental impact of these industries.
Within the pulp and paper industry, the increase in
the bleachability of pulp decreases the amount of bleach
chemicals used. This results in a decrease of chlorinated
effluents discharged, and could decrease effluent colour.
Mills facing environmental goals in these areas, either
AOX, dioxins and furans, or simple total colour, can
benefit from increased pulp bleachability.
